I write this both as Jon’s father and as someone professionally qualified to evaluate technical talent. Before becoming a full-time photographer, I was an engineering manager responsible for a highly technical team at a Fortune 50 company. My work required me to assess engineers and other technical professionals for analytical ability, accuracy, judgment, adaptability, and performance. I do not offer the following assessment casually.
Jon is one of the most naturally capable analytical problem-solvers I have encountered. What distinguishes him is not intelligence alone, but the unusual combination of speed and accuracy with which he works. He can absorb a complicated problem, identify its essential elements, and develop a sound solution remarkably quickly—without sacrificing precision in the process.
That ability was evident as he progressed through demanding studies in both mathematics and mechanical engineering, and it has continued in his professional work in digital construction engineering. It is equally apparent whenever I bring him a technical, operational, or photographic problem. Jon does not become overwhelmed by complexity. He studies the system, understands how its components interact, and finds a practical way forward.

As a headshot photographer, capturing the character of a person in a single frame is both a challenge and a joy. What clients may not always see, however, is the work taking place behind the camera—the technical judgment, preparation, observation, and problem-solving that help make each successful image possible.
Today, I want to recognize someone who has become indispensable to that work: my son and technical assistant, Jon Douglas Bornemeier.

Jon has impressed me throughout his life with his extraordinary technical and analytical abilities. He combines accuracy and speed in a way that is genuinely unusual. Whether he is confronting an engineering problem, evaluating a technical system, or helping me refine a photographic workflow, he has an exceptional ability to understand the issue, identify what matters, and arrive at a sound solution—often remarkably quickly.
His academic accomplishments reflect that ability. Jon moved through demanding degree programs in both mathematics and mechanical engineering with a level of speed and command that made extremely difficult material appear almost effortless. He has since applied those abilities professionally in digital construction engineering, where precision, spatial reasoning, technological fluency, and disciplined problem-solving are essential.
Photography may be different from mathematics, mechanical engineering, and digital construction, but the underlying abilities translate remarkably well. Jon sees systems. He notices inconsistencies. He understands how many small technical decisions work together to affect the final result. Most importantly, he can be relied upon to get those decisions right.
I do not offer that assessment lightly—or merely as a proud father. Working with family can be a unique experience, blending personal and professional relationships. With Jon beside me, demanding location assignments become environments of collaboration, precision, and creativity.
He has the rare ability to move quickly without becoming careless. On a busy assignment, that matters enormously. Lighting, equipment, subject flow, image quality, file management, and the unexpected problems that inevitably arise must all be handled accurately and efficiently. Jon remains observant and composed while helping keep the entire operation moving.
No matter what problem I throw in his direction, he approaches it methodically, understands it quickly, and finds a practical solution. That combination of intelligence, adaptability, and dependability gives me greater freedom to concentrate on the person in front of my camera.
Technical Precision Behind Every Image
Jon’s understanding of lighting, camera equipment, image evaluation, and digital workflow has materially improved the work of Executive Lens.
He can recognize when a small adjustment to a light, modifier, or subject position will improve the catchlights, facial modeling, or consistency of a series. He helps assess images for focus, sharpness, expression, and technical quality while the session is still underway—when corrections can be made immediately rather than discovered later.
His contribution extends well beyond the moment of capture. Jon has also helped modernize and strengthen the studio’s digital processes, bringing an engineer’s understanding of efficiency, organization, and quality control to the photographic workflow. His instinct is not merely to make a process work, but to understand it and determine how it can work more reliably.
A Fresh and Independent Perspective
One of the greatest benefits of working with Jon is that he brings his own perspective to every assignment. He does not simply follow instructions. He observes, evaluates, and offers ideas.

Education in Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering
Jon earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Portland State University and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of North Dakota. Together, these degrees reflect both the theoretical and practical dimensions of his abilities: the abstract reasoning and disciplined logic of mathematics combined with the applied analysis, design, and problem-solving required in mechanical engineering.
His command of the material became particularly apparent when he took the Fundamentals of Engineering examination. The FE exam covers a broad range of demanding engineering subjects, yet Jon moved through it with remarkable confidence. His strong command of the underlying principles—and his ability to recall and apply material from throughout his coursework—made an extensive examination seem almost routine.
What has always impressed me is not simply Jon’s ability to complete difficult academic work. It is the speed with which he understands complex material, the accuracy with which he applies it, and his ability to retain that knowledge for practical use long afterward.
Professional Experience in Digital Construction Engineering
Jon has applied his mathematical, engineering, and programming abilities in the field of digital construction engineering. This work requires considerably more than proficiency with a particular piece of software. It demands an understanding of geometry, fabrication, construction processes, digital modeling, programming, and the practical realities of turning an intricate design into a physical structure.
A notable example was his work involving the mass-timber beams created for Portland International Airport. These remarkable structural components are now among the airport’s most recognizable architectural features and have become a regional point of interest.
Jon was assigned to develop and write the CNC programming required for their fabrication. He not only successfully developed that programming, but also identified opportunities to improve and streamline many of the associated work processes and technical methods. Rather than limiting himself to completing the assignment as presented, he studied the larger system and found ways to make the work more efficient, reliable, and practical.
That is characteristic of Jon. He does not merely ask, “How do I complete this task?” He also asks, “How can this entire process work better?”
Technical and Analytical Strengths
Jon possesses an unusually strong combination of mathematical reasoning, engineering judgment, computer-programming knowledge, and practical problem-solving ability. He can absorb a complicated problem quickly, recognize its essential elements, and work toward a solution without becoming distracted by unnecessary complexity.
Speed alone, however, is not what distinguishes him. It is the combination of speed and accuracy. Jon works quickly because he understands the material—not because he takes shortcuts. He is methodical when method is required, inventive when conventional approaches prove limiting, and careful about the details that determine whether a solution will work outside of theory.
Jon is familiar with multiple programming languages and is comfortable selecting an appropriate technical approach for the problem at hand. Just as importantly, he understands that the most sophisticated solution is not necessarily the most useful one. Whenever possible, he delivers tools in an environment his clients or colleagues already understand and feel comfortable using.
Microsoft Excel is a frequent example. Jon understands capabilities within Excel that many everyday users never discover. He can use those capabilities to create powerful analytical and operational tools while presenting the user with an approachable interface and an organized workspace. The complexity remains behind the scenes, allowing the person using the tool to work confidently without needing to understand everything supporting it.
That ability—to combine sophisticated internal logic with a clear and practical user experience—is one of Jon’s most valuable professional strengths.
Examples of Jon’s Problem-Solving
The CNC programming for Portland International Airport’s mass-timber beams is one of the clearest public examples of Jon’s abilities. It required him to bring together engineering knowledge, digital modeling, fabrication requirements, programming, precision, and practical workflow considerations. He completed the central assignment while also improving the processes surrounding it.
His Excel-based solutions demonstrate another side of the same talent. Jon can take a complex problem that might ordinarily require unfamiliar or specialized software and develop a solution within a platform the intended users already know. He uses advanced features, programming, automation, and carefully designed interfaces to give users something both powerful and approachable.
I have observed the same pattern whenever I have brought him a technical problem of my own. Jon listens carefully, identifies what I am actually trying to accomplish, and finds a solution that accounts for both the technical requirements and the way the solution will be used in practice.
He does not solve problems merely to demonstrate that they can be solved. He develops solutions that other people can understand, trust, and use.
His Contributions to Executive Lens
Jon has made important contributions to Executive Lens as both a technical assistant and a trusted problem-solver. On location, he helps manage lighting, equipment, image evaluation, subject flow, and the many technical details that must remain coordinated during a professional photography assignment.
He is particularly valuable when an assignment requires both speed and precision. Jon can monitor image sharpness, lighting consistency, equipment performance, and workflow while recognizing potential problems early enough for us to correct them immediately. His calm, analytical approach allows me to devote more of my attention to the person in front of the camera.
Jon has also helped modernize the studio’s digital workflow. He approaches photographic systems much as he approaches an engineering system: by examining how the individual components interact, identifying inefficiencies, and determining how the process can become more consistent and reliable.
His contributions are not limited to carrying out instructions. He observes independently, offers thoughtful critiques, and frequently identifies improvements I would not have considered on my own. Executive Lens operates more efficiently and with greater technical confidence because of his involvement.
My Professional Assessment of Jon
I am naturally proud of Jon as his father, but my assessment of his abilities is also grounded in professional experience. Before becoming a full-time photographer, I worked as an engineering manager responsible for a highly technical team at a Fortune 50 company. Evaluating technical ability, analytical judgment, accuracy, adaptability, and professional performance was an important part of my work.
I therefore do not give compliments of this kind lightly.
Jon is exceptionally intelligent, but that intelligence is not always immediately obvious because of his outward modesty. He does not naturally call attention to how much he knows, nor does he attempt to impress others by making a problem appear more complicated than it is. He is more interested in understanding the work, solving the problem correctly, and delivering something useful.
That modesty is an admirable personal quality, but it can conceal the true range of his knowledge and talents. Those who work closely with him soon discover an individual with uncommon analytical ability, broad technical fluency, excellent recall, and the capacity to move between theoretical concepts and practical implementation with remarkable ease.
Jon is the person I turn to when a problem is technically difficult, unfamiliar, or resistant to the obvious solution. I trust both his abilities and his judgment.
